A Guide to Candle and Menorah Safety: As the holiday season approaches many households embrace the warm glow of candles and menorahs to celebrate festive occasions such as Hanukkah and Advent.  Others just like the use of candlelight for relaxation or setting the mood at parties and gatherings.  While these traditional sources of light add a special ambiance to the festivities, it’s essential to prioritize safety to ensure joyous occasions aren’t marred by accidents. Today, we’ll explore key safety tips for using candles and menorahs, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of these traditions responsibly.

Candle Safety Tips:

  1. Never Leave Unattended:
    • The cardinal rule of candle safety is never to leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to bed.
  2. Keep Away from Flammable Items:
    • Ensure candles are placed on heat-resistant surfaces and kept away from flammable materials such as curtains, decorations, or paper.
  3. Use Appropriate Candle Holders:
    • Choose sturdy, non-flammable candle holders that can catch dripping wax and won’t tip over easily. Ensure the candle fits securely in the holder.
  4. Trim Candle Wicks:
    • Trim candle wicks to approximately a quarter of an inch before lighting. This prevents excessively large flames and reduces the risk of sparks or embers.
  5. Keep Pets and Children Away:
    • Position candles out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental knocks or burns. Educate family members about the dangers of playing with candles.

Menorah Safety Tips:

  1. Place on a Stable Surface:
    • Set the menorah on a stable, non-flammable surface, away from any combustible materials. A flat surface reduces the risk of the menorah tipping over.
  2. Never Leave Unattended:
    • As with candles, never leave a burning menorah unattended. Ensure all candles are extinguished before leaving the room.
  3. Check for Stability:
    • Before lighting the menorah, ensure it is stable and won’t easily topple. A secure base is crucial for the safe celebration of the festival of lights.
  4. Use Caution with Flames:
    • Exercise caution when lighting each candle. Be mindful of any loose clothing or hair, and keep hands, hair, and clothing away from the flames.
  5. Consider Alternative Lights:
    • For added safety, consider using electric menorahs, which eliminate the risk of an open flame. They are a great option, especially in homes with small children or pets.
