Per NFPA 10 Fire Extinguishers require annual maintenance shall include the following Maintenance Procedures.
Where required by another section of this standard, maintenance procedures shall include the procedures detailed in the manufacturer’s service manual and a thorough examination of the basic elements of the fire extinguisher, including the following:
(1) Mechanical parts of all fire extinguishers
(2) Extinguishing agent
(3) Expelling means
(4) Physical condition
Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Checklist
When you hire a professional to conduct a your NFPA 10 required fire extinguisher maintenance, the technician will:
- Check for proper sizes, types, quantity and placement of fire extinguishers
- Ensure that each fire extinguisher is properly mounted, conspicuously located, not obstructed by objects and readily available for use in case of a fire
- Make sure the instruction label is legible and facing outward
- Ensure that the proper amount of fire extinguishing agent is in the extinguihser
- Check to be sure the extinguisher is fully pressurized
- Make sure the fire extinguisher hose is intact and free from blockage
- CO2 Extinguishers need to have the hose conductivity tested
- Break the locking pin tamper seal on the extinguisher
- Operate the pull pin or locking device to ensure that it will function in the event of an emergency
- Install a new tamper seal
- Check for dents, corrosion or other signs of damage in the cylinder
- Look for any damage or changes in the fire extinguisher that could possibly reduce its functionality
- Verify that the extinguisher is current on it’s internal maintenance requirements
- Verify that the extinguisher is current on it’s pressure testing requirements
- Attach an updated service tag or label as a record of proper maintenance
